
Altitude training camps are very beneficial. Falls Creek offers the best infrastructure for triathlon training.
It has beautiful trails, challenging roads and a beautiful crystal clear water lake for open water swims.
Pool swims are also included at Mount Beauty as well as flat riding and running at only 400m altitude.
Falls Creek also provides flat running along the aqueduct and flattish ride to Mount Cope car park and
back.
Training camps are fun. The social aspect is very important during and after training sessions. We often
catch up for a meal or dinner out and it is a great way to improve by spending time with your coach.
Also, you can turn into the pro life for a week. No kids, work, house duties, social catch ups or friends in the
way, just fun, training, good food and rest. What a life!
As athlete, we seek new ways to improve our athletic performance. One popular strategy is high altitude
training, also known as high elevation training. This method involves training at higher altitudes, where it’s
harder to breathe. It can improve how your body responds to exercise, and therefore, increase your
endurance. This will enhance your performance in competitions, but recovery period is needed once back
at sea level. It is recommended that you don’t stay in altitude for more than 4 weeks as fatigue will slowly
increase. Benefits have been recorded at a red cell and Vo2 max level from one week training in altitude
over 1500m elevation.
BENEFITS:
1) Better muscle oxygenation:
When you work out, your blood delivers oxygen to your muscles. The oxygen is used to produce
energy, which helps your muscles move and perform activity.
But as you continue exercising, your blood won’t be able to keep up with the oxygen demands of
your muscles. Your muscles will eventually become fatigued.
EPO is a hormone that makes red blood cells, which carry oxygen to various parts of the body.
Higher EPO production increases RBC, thus enhancing oxygen delivery.
Increasing EPO production is your body’s way of adapting to the low oxygen levels at high altitudes.
According to this same study, the effect continues at sea level. This means you will benefit from
improved oxygen delivery while competing at sea level.
2) Increased aerobic capacity
Along with improving oxygen flow, high altitude training can also increase your maximal oxygen
intake, or Vo2max. This is the highest amount of oxygen your body can consume during intense
exercise. The higher your VO 2 max, the better your endurance.
3) Better lactic acid capacity
As your muscles use oxygen during intense exercise, they produce a byproduct called lactic acid.
Lactic acid can accumulate and lead to muscle fatigue. As a result, you’ll need to stop working out.
4) Adaptation:
Altitude training can be demanding on the body, especially over 2000m. It is important to train by
heart rate in altitude and to reduce the intensity of the training. You need to drink more and
consume more calories as you will lose more water through heavy breathing and more calories
through a higher heart rate.
The symptoms of altitude sickness can include:
- headache
- tiredness
- nausea
- lack of appetite
- difficulty to breathe
